Voices of diversity conference program
Title “Voices of Diversity: Living Out in the South” College Conference Preliminary Program
Date 1996
Description “Voices of Diversity: Living Out in the South” was the theme for  the Fifth Annual Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual College Conference of the Southeastern United States, held on The University of Alabama Campus in 1996 and sponsored by UA’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Alliance (GLBA). The event had previously been held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. As attorney general of Alabama, Jeff Sessions repeatedly tried to stop the 1996 conference from taking place at UA, even threatening to take legal action against the university on the basis of a 1992 Alabama law that aimed to prohibit state schools from giving money or space to LGBTQ organizations. The 1992 law was overturned, and Sessions’ efforts to halt the conference were unsuccessful.
