In preparation for the parade on Saturday, many folks around campus are putting the finishing touches on their floats. Our fraternities are old hands at this, as we can see from the pictures below, from the late 1940s. (Click on any of the images below to view them in better detail in Acumen.)<\/p>\n<p>It helps to have a good infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/40465\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"homecoming float\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0001\/2008035\/0000004\/u0001_2008035_0000004_2048.jpg\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\" \/><\/a>(Anybody know where they&#8217;ve set up shop here? Looks like somewhere in the vicinity of Manly or Clark&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/40469\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"homecoming float\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0001\/2008035\/0000008\/u0001_2008035_0000008_2048.jpg\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s good to have plenty of help&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/40468\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"homecoming float\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0001\/2008035\/0000007\/u0001_2008035_0000007_2048.jpg\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\" \/><\/a>&#8230;even if they&#8217;re sometimes less than helpful.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/40467\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"homecoming float\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0001\/2008035\/0000006\/u0001_2008035_0000006_2048.jpg\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\" \/><\/a>Do you think this float impressed their girlfriends?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/40462\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"homecoming float\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0001\/2008035\/0000001\/u0001_2008035_0000001_2048.jpg\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\" \/><\/a>The collection these images come from, <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/37671\">George Nichols photographs<\/a>, consists of one hundred and thirteen black and white photographs of Nichols as a student at the University of Alabama and the Theta Chi fraternity member in the late 1940s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Homecoming 2012 is now in full swing, with the theme Timeless Traditions.
