June 19, 2014 is the 150th anniversary of the battle between the CSS <em>Alabama<\/em> and the USS <em>Kearsarge<\/em>, which resulted in the sinking of the <em>Alabama<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1420\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0575.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1420\" class=\"wp-image-1420 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0575-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0575\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0575-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0575.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CSS Alabama, photograph from the Edwward Maffitt Anderson photograph album<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today she rests at a depth of 190 feet off the coast of Cherbourg, France.\u00a0 She sank in battle 150 years ago, on June 19, 1864, after a two year cruise that resulted in the capture and sinking of 65 U.S. merchant ships and 1 U.S. Navy ship.\u00a0 Built in England, she sailed under the Confederate flag and spent almost her entire two years of service at sea, never dropping anchor in a Southern port.\u00a0 She influenced the both the American Civil War and international law.\u00a0 Known to the world as CSS <em>Alabama,<\/em> she was the most successful commerce raider of the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>CSS <em>Alabama<\/em> was built in secrecy in Birkenhead, England in 1862, by John Laird and Sons and was first known simply as ship <em>290<\/em>.\u00a0 James D. Bulloch, the Confederate foreign agent in Britain, oversaw the construction. Thomas H. Dudley, the U.S. Consul in Liverpool, pressed the British government to impound <em>290<\/em>, insisting that she was being built for the Confederate Navy in violation of Britain&#8217;s position of neutrality.\u00a0 The two men were in a race to see whether Bulloch could build faster than Dudley could gather information.\u00a0 In a tight contest, Bulloch won.\u00a0 Ship <em>290<\/em>, now christened <em>Enrica,<\/em> sailed out of Birkenhead on the evening of July 29, 1863.\u00a0 She made her way to the Azores to take on supplies and armament.\u00a0 While there, she was boarded by her new captain, Raphael Semmes.\u00a0 On August 25, the Confederate flag was raised and <em>Enrica<\/em> was re-named CSS <em>Alabama.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1421\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0566.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1421\" class=\"wp-image-1421 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0566-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0566\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0566-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0566.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ralph Semmes, captain of the CSS Alabama, image taken from <em>Memoirs of Service Afloat during the War Between the States<\/em> (1869)\u00a0Alabama Collection E599.A3 S64<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Departing the Azores on August 26, <em>Alabama<\/em> claimed her first prize on September 6.\u00a0 She raided commerce vessels in the Eastern Atlantic, along the East Coast of the United States, and in the Gulf of Mexico.\u00a0 There, in January, 1863, <em>Alabama<\/em> sank the Union warship USS <em>Hatteras <\/em>near Galveston, Texas.\u00a0 From the Gulf of Mexico, <em>Alabama<\/em> steamed to the South Atlantic where she claimed a total of 29 ships captured or burned.\u00a0 One prize, the bark <em>Conrad<\/em>, was captured on June 20, 1863, and re-commissioned by Captain Semmes as CSS <em>Tuscaloosa<\/em>.\u00a0 Semmes ordered Lieutenant John Low to take command of the new Confederate ship.\u00a0 The two commerce raiders then headed to the South African coast.\u00a0 <em>Tuscaloosa<\/em> was later seized in South Africa for violating British neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>In September, 1863, <em>Alabama<\/em> traveled into the Indian Ocean.\u00a0 She went as far as the Indonesian Islands before returning west.\u00a0 This raid into Southeast Asian waters nearly resulted in battle with the USS <em>Wyoming, <\/em>which was on a mission to destroy the allusive Confederate raider.\u00a0 The two ships never met, and Semmes returned to Cape Town, South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Come back on Wednesday, June 18 to\u00a0read\u00a0the next part of the story!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: Kevin Ray, Archival Technician This post is the first of three posts in a week-long series describing the history of the CSS Alabama and the resources available in the Division of Special Collections on both this ship and the &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2014\/06\/16\/css-alabama-part-i\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":435,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6759,7125,11189],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1414","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-alabama-collection","category-css-alabama","category-kevin-ray"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
