On Monday,<a title=\"Happy Bastille Day! Introduction to Early Modern French Holdings\" href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2014\/07\/14\/happy-bastille-day-introduction-to-early-modern-french-holdings\/\">\u00a0early modern books were\u00a0covered<\/a> and on Wednesday, t<a title=\"Introduction to French Enlightenment Holdings\" href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2014\/07\/16\/introduction-to-french-enlightenment-holdings\/\">he French Enlightenment<\/a> was\u00a0explored. Today, on the last day of our series, we will conclude with\u00a0a\u00a0discussion of French Revolutionary pamphlets.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To provide a brief history, the French Revolution began in 1789 when the French proletariat stormed the Bastille on July 14. In August, the National Assembly abolished\u00a0feudalism and released the <span style=\"color: #101010\"><em>D\u00e9claration des droits de l\u2019homme et du citoyen<\/em> (<\/span><em>Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen).<\/em>\u00a0June 1790 brought the\u00a0abolition of the nobility and, in May 1791, the Assembly\u00a0determined that all\u00a0citizens are equal, regardless of their skin color. King Louis XVI\u00a0accepted the Constitution on September 1791, but he was tried for high treason in December 1792 and\u00a0executed in\u00a0January 1793.\u00a0By\u00a0October 14, 1793, his Queen, Marie Antoinette, also was executed. Further executions would follow during the Reign of Terror, which lasted from roughly September 1793\u00a0through July 1794. In\u00a01797, Napoleon Bonaparte began his ascent to power;\u00a0in 1799, he staged a coup that consolidated his rule as first consul. In 1804, he became Emperor, a title he would hold until 1815, with the exception of a period between 1814 and 1815, when he was placed in exile on the island of Elba.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, pamphlets were used to discuss\u00a0human rights, the roles of citizenship, and class identity.\u00a0Alabama holds 319\u00a0French Revolution pamphlets, which have been digitized and are available on <a title=\"French Revolutionary Pamphlets\" href=\"http:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/u0002_0000006\" target=\"_blank\">Acumen<\/a>. Take a moment to explore these pamphlets, which have had their interior pages as well as their covers digitized. Privately printed and meant to be ephemeral, these pamphlets served as an important medium to keep everyday citizens abreast of political and intellectual events during this significant era of French history.
