Novak&#8217;s exhibition will be up for the remainder of the semester.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;color: #000000\">In case you can&#8217;t manage to stop by, you can read more about the books she selected to feature here. On Monday, she discussed <a title=\"Banned: Ulysses and 1984\" href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2014\/10\/06\/banned-ulysses-and-1984\/\"><em>Ulysses<\/em> and <em>1984<\/em><\/a>; today, she shares information about <em>Beloved<\/em> and <em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1776\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/10\/Beloved.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1776\" class=\"wp-image-1776 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/10\/Beloved-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"Beloved\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/10\/Beloved-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/10\/Beloved.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beloved Hoole Library Wade Hall Collection PS3563.O8749 B4 1987<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;color: #000000\"><em style=\"font-style: italic\">Beloved<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The novel\u00a0<em style=\"font-style: italic\">Beloved\u00a0<\/em>(1978) by Toni Morrison follows a slave named Sethe who escapes to Ohio from a plantation in Kentucky owned by Mr. Garner to find her family and free herself. Throughout the novel, flashbacks portray what Sethe\u2019s life was like in Kentucky as well as when she first came to Cincinnati.\u00a0 Sethe was free when she first arrived, but a school teacher from the plantation came to find her and her children.\u00a0 Before the school teacher could get to Sethe\u2019s children, she took them to a shed to kill them, but only succeeded in killing her youngest daughter who became the ghost that haunts Sethe\u2019s house on 124 Bluestone Road.<\/p>\n<p>Many school districts throughout the United States challenged the inclusion of the novel\u00a0<em style=\"font-style: italic\">Beloved<\/em>\u00a0on their curriculum.\u00a0 In 2011, parents of AP English students brought up the racial slurs and sexuality present throughout the novel.\u00a0 These charges made\u00a0<em style=\"font-style: italic\">Beloved<\/em>\u00a0one of the most challenged books in the United States since it was published.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1777\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/10\/TKAM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1777\" class=\"wp-image-1777 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2014\/10\/TKAM-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"TKAM\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">To Kill a Mockingbird Hoole Library Alabama Collection PS3562.E353 T6 2002<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;color: #000000\"><em style=\"font-style: italic\">To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-style: italic\">To Kill a Mockingbird\u00a0<\/em>(1960) by Harper Lee received rave reviews in\u00a0<em style=\"font-style: italic\">The New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em style=\"font-style: italic\">Time<\/em>\u00a0magazines. In the story, Scout and Jem, her brother, live with their widowed father Atticus, who is a prosperous and well-known lawyer.\u00a0 The summer before Scout starts school, the siblings and their close friend Dill become interested in a creepy house down the street known as Radley place.\u00a0 This house is where Boo, a recluse who has never been seen by anyone, supposedly lives. The three adolescents spend their childhood trying to see if Arthur \u201cBoo\u201d Radley is really there or if he is just a tale. Throughout the course of the novel, Boo protects the children, often without being detected.<\/p>\n<p>When the novel\u00a0<em style=\"font-style: italic\">To Kill a Mockingbird\u00a0<\/em>first entered the classroom in 1963, the topic of rape and racial inequality in the American South became a reoccurring issue for parents and school administrators to consider.\u00a0 \u201cRacial slurs, profanity, and blunt dialogue about rape\u201d are the reasons that this novel is frequently challenged in school districts.\u00a0 Many parents were so outraged that the subject of rape was in the novel that they sent letters to the local newspaper to help the get the book banned from school curricula.\u00a0 Some school districts throughout the United States eventually decided to ban the novel from their school systems because of the language that is present throughout the book and the fact that the novel did not present a portrait of a positive and seamless integration process in the South.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: Page Novak, UA undergraduate This fall, step into the lobby of Mary Harmon Bryant Hall to see Page Novak&#8217;s display of banned books celebrating Banned Book Week, which was September 21-27.
