From Ellsworth Hult’s diary, MSS.3735<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0Mosquito<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our birth occurred in such a cold place,
\nIn the stillness of the naval yards of Philadelphia.
\nOur mission was to head south \u2013 to the source of sustenance.
\nWinter turned into spring
\nAnd we grew steadily stronger –
\nNurtured in the warmth of the Gulf of Mexico.
\nWe then found the rest of our swarm.
\n\u201cOnward\u201d was our buzzing anthem.
\nWe found our precious blood.
\nThe Rebel flag over the fort drew our eyes,
\nEnticing us to come and take
\nHer sweet blood from her body.
\nWe became famished over
\nThe past four years. It became time
\nTo dine.
\nThe swarm was buzzing around.
\nIt almost sounded as if
\nThe iron and wood mosquitoes
\nWere all chanting the name:
\n\u201cFort Morgan.\u201d
\nThe scent of blood drew more
\nOf us to her brick skin.
\nTheir attempts to swat us were
\nAll in vain.
\nJune turned into July,
\nJuly into August.
\nOur swarms\u2019 buzzing
\nBecame a famished symphony and
\nGrew louder than the cannons.
\nFeast!
\nFeast!
\nFeast!
\nFeast!
\nTheir sweet nectar was ours.
\nThe white flag appeared.
\nNo more blood.
\nOur appetites had been fulfilled.
