Dear Readers,<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"IMG_2606\"<\/a>As it is the end of my postdoctoral fellowship, I’ve accepted an offer to become a Special Collections Librarian in charge of the instruction program at the University of Iowa, my alma mater, beginning in June 2015. I’ve\u00a0very much appreciated\u00a0my time at the University of Alabama Division of Special Collections.\u00a0I could not be more thankful for my time with my\u00a0colleagues in the W.S. Hoole Library<\/a> and the A.S. Williams III Americana Collection<\/a>,\u00a0the faculty and students I’ve worked with during my time at UA, and the community members I’ve met while living in Tuscaloosa.<\/p>\n

Cool@Hoole was a tradition at the Capstone\u00a0before I came to UA. The first iteration of Cool@Hoole\u00a0came under the editorship of its founder, Jessica Lacher-Feldman, currently the head of the Department of Special Collections at Louisiana State University<\/a>. Lacher-Feldman ran the blog between October 2007<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0March 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Serving as the\u00a0second editor of\u00a0Cool@Hoole has been an honor.\u00a0During the time I’ve run Cool@Hoole,\u00a0between October 2013<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0May 2014<\/a>, the blog\u00a0posted 140 entries by 49 contributors, including 11 undergraduate and 11 graduate students, 15 librarians, 6 faculty members, and 6 community members from both within and outside of the Tuscaloosa area. Ellie Campbell<\/a> and Ashley Bond<\/a>, my graduate assistants from the School of Library and Information Studies<\/a> (SLIS), assisted with this output.<\/p>\n

Among the topics Cool@Hoole\u00a0discussed was the\u00a0pedagogy inspired by the Division’s holdings. During the past two years, we’ve chatted with professors\u00a0Jessica Kidd<\/a>, Lauren Cardon<\/a>, Stacy Morgan<\/a>, and Brooke<\/a> Champagne<\/a>.\u00a0Rachel Deale, Melissa Young, and Lindsay Smith<\/a>, three doctoral students from the history department, shared what it was like to be the first graduate student curators on the Division of Special Collection’s newly-launched public history initiative that\u00a0provides\u00a0curation experiences<\/a> for burgeoning subject specialists.<\/p>\n

As exhibitions are a venue to\u00a0promote UA’s unique and rare materials,\u00a0Cool@Hoole also covered the shows mounted during this period. Topics for our exhibitions included of strengths in\u00a0Southern photography<\/a>, World War I<\/a>, and\u00a0Confederate print culture<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0sheet music<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While exhibitions cover significant\u00a0subject areas\u00a0found in our\u00a0Special Collections, Cool@Hoole also provided overviews of particularly significant items and collections. We posted\u00a0descriptions of Enoch Arden<\/em>‘s fore-edge painting<\/a>,\u00a0a\u00a0map of Tuscaloosa when the city\u00a0was still called Newtown<\/a>,\u00a0and even what we found in between the pages of the\u00a0South’s first anthology<\/a> dedicated to women’s writing and our early modern manuscript<\/a>! Plus, we gave an inside scoop to the items our staff members count among their favorites<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But what makes special collections great is not just our materials; our Division is\u00a0made up of the people who bring their expertise to Williams and Hoole every day to help students and researchers. We’ve interviewed\u00a0six\u00a0SLIS\u00a0graduate students who worked at either Williams or Hoole —\u00a0Alex Goolsby<\/a>, Ashley Bond<\/a>, Ellie Campbell<\/a>, Haley Aaron<\/a>,\u00a0Katie Howard<\/a>, Mary Haney<\/a>\u00a0—\u00a0and provided features by many of\u00a0the\u00a0permanent staff who work in the Division, including Associate Dean Mary Bess Paluzzi<\/a>, rare book cataloger Allyson Holliday<\/a>, archivist Martha Bace<\/a>, archivist April Burnett<\/a>, postdoctoral fellows Chris Sawula<\/a> and Christa Vogelius<\/a>, archival coordinator Donnelly Walton<\/a>, institutional records analyst and reference librarian Kevin Ray<\/a>, Williams curator Nancy DuPree<\/a>, archival technician Patrick Adcock<\/a>, and former institutional records analyst Tom Land<\/a>. We also remembered Joyce Lamont<\/a>, our founding mother. Together, we have you covered, whether you want to\u00a0book a class<\/a>, trace your ancestry<\/a>,\u00a0create a digital humanities project<\/a>, or learn how to curate<\/a> an exhibition<\/a>.<\/p>\n
