Comic books have become a popular form of entertainment in India. While at first they had to content themselves with our\u00a0western characters and publishers, more and more India has produced its own heroes and superheroes, such as Super Commando Dhruva, Parmanu, and Shaktimaan.<\/p>\n

It has also seen the rise of comics featuring legendary\u00a0Indian figures and stories. The Alan R. Maxwell Asian Book Fund, endowed by a former anthropology professor, has provided the resources for Hoole Library\u00a0to\u00a0acquire over\u00a0300 of these comics, most published by\u00a0Amar Chitra Katha.<\/p>\n

Many states or regions of\u00a0India are represented, including\u00a0Assam, Arunchal Pradesh, Bengal, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh,\u00a0Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Tripura.<\/p>\n

Here’s an overview of what you’ll find.<\/p>\n

Religion<\/h2>\n

Hindu and Buddhist figures\u00a0predominate, although there are a few stories of\u00a0Jain or\u00a0Sikh origin. (Islam, a significant religious minority in India, is not represented because of its discomfort with or outright prohibition of the\u00a0depiction of humans in art.)<\/p>\n

Most\u00a0Buddhist stories are Jataka\u00a0tales<\/a>, fables\u00a0featuring the\u00a0Buddha in animal (or sometimes human) form.\u00a0Many of Hindu stories are about Krishna <\/a>or other incarnations of Vishnu.<\/p>\n

Folk tales from various regions\u00a0and ethnic groups of\u00a0India are represented, as well as stories from neighboring countries.<\/p>\n

Two common types are animal fables\u00a0and Birbal tales.<\/p>\n

Animal fables\u00a0are often drawn from the Panchatantra<\/em>, a collection of tales designed to communicate wisdom and lessons to\u00a0three young princes.<\/p>\n

Birbal was a historical figure, an advisor to 16th century Mogul emperor Akbar. He’s passed into oral folklore as a\u00a0man who is constantly tested by his enemies or his emperor, but manages to use his wit and cleverness to prevail.<\/p>\n

Adaptations<\/h2>\n

Much of the collection features adaptations from other sources. Most come from literature, from ancient epics like the Mahabharata<\/em> and Ramayana<\/em> to collections of tales like the Bhavishya<\/em> and Bhagavata Puranas.\u00a0<\/em>Others come from scripture and philosophy like the\u00a0Upanishads<\/em> and Vedas<\/em>.<\/p>\n

History<\/h2>\n

Many historical figures have their stories told in these comics. They are often rulers or spiritual leaders, people whose lives are to be emulated or who had a great influence on Indian history.<\/p>\n
