I like to think of them as rare books in training.<\/p>\n<p>One kind of specialized resource we have a lot of is cookbooks. Soon, we&#8217;ll be mounting an exhibit with items\u00a0from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.ua.edu\/collections\/the-david-walker-lupton-african-american-cookbook-collection\">Lupton Collection<\/a>\u00a0of African-American Cookbooks\u00a0and from a donation made by Rev. Wylheme Ragland. The lighting of the menorah recalls\u00a0the\u00a0miracle of a Temple lamp which stayed alight for\u00a0eight\u00a0days, even though there was only enough oil for one. According to Cohen, this commemoration &#8220;resonates powerfully in the dead of winter, reflecting the triumph of faith over faithlessness and hope over despair&#8221; (253).<\/p>\n<p>The emphasis on oil translates to a lot of fried foods, something not usually possible for major Jewish festivals and observances, for which meals must be prepared beforehand. Unsurprisingly, the Hanukkah section is chock full of recipes for latkes. Here are just a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creamy Potato-Onion Latkes<\/li>\n<li>Crispy Shallot Latkes with Sugar Dusting<\/li>\n<li>New Mexican Sweet Potato Latkes with Lime-Sour Cream Sauce<\/li>\n<li>Mediterranean Chickpea Latkes<\/li>\n<li>Herbed Spinach Latkes<\/li>\n<li>Walnut-Cherry-Cheese Latkes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One hint from Cohen about latke batter: Cold batter will cool the oil and lead to soggy latkes. Let your batter get up to room temperature before frying it.<\/p>\n<p>Hanukkah\u00a0began this year at sundown on December 6, and it will end at nightfall on December 14.<\/p>\n<h2>Christmas<\/h2>\n<h3>Camille Glenn&#8217;s <em>Old Fashioned Christmas Cookbook<\/em><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_2688\" style=\"width: 265px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Christmas_C-Glenn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2688\" class=\"wp-image-2688 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Christmas_C-Glenn-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas_C-Glenn\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Christmas_C-Glenn-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Christmas_C-Glenn.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wade Hall Coll., TX739.2.C45 G54 1996<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Christmas commemorates\u00a0the birth\u00a0of the Christian savior, Jesus, at the dawn of the first century C.E.\u00a0Glenn points out that the celebration\u00a0was designed to hook into the symbology of existing midwinter festivals like the solstice and Saturnalia, which celebrated how the long, dark nights of winter would be soon turning to longer days and more sun (xiv).<\/p>\n<p>Many\u00a0Christmas traditions are essentially from 19th century\u00a0England or\u00a0Germany, such as\u00a0putting up a lighted\u00a0Christmas tree. Glenn argues\u00a0that these traditions especially took hold in the South, which was less Puritan and blessed with abundant resources during its milder winters. Her cookbook reflects her Southern upbringing. One of her Christmas Eve menus finds the usual flavors of the season (harvest\u00a0spices and autumn fruits)\u00a0alongside a Southern staple: country ham!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mulled Red Wine<\/li>\n<li>Country Ham Baked in Cider<\/li>\n<li>Spiced Pear and Cranberry Relish<\/li>\n<li>Baked Brown Rice with Almonds or Pine Nuts<\/li>\n<li>Kentucky Bourbon Pie<\/li>\n<li>Best-Ever Pumpkin Pie<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Christmas is always celebrated on\u00a0December 25, which this year is a Friday.<\/p>\n<h2>Kwanzaa<\/h2>\n<h3>Jessica B. Harris&#8217;s<em> A Kwanzaa Keepsake<\/em><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_2690\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Kwanzaa_JB-Harris.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2690\" class=\"wp-image-2690 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Kwanzaa_JB-Harris-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kwanzaa_JB-Harris\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Kwanzaa_JB-Harris-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2015\/12\/Kwanzaa_JB-Harris.jpg 664w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lupton Coll., GT4403.H37 1998<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kwanzaa is a unique holiday, inaugurated in the 1960s by African Americans who wanted to find a celebration that spoke to their cultural background. They turned, then, to Africa, bringing together elements from various harvest festivals.\u00a0Kwanza is a\u00a0Swahili word, meaning &#8220;first.&#8221; According to Harris, the added second &#8220;a&#8221; denotes the African American version of the word (13).<\/p>\n<p>Kwanzaa is a time of self-examination, but also of coming together\u00a0with\u00a0family and friends. Each day is devoted to one of seven principles: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith.\u00a0Kwanzaa traditions are various, so there is no one traditional\u00a0menu. Harris, for her part, always chooses food that reflects the influence of Africa on American cuisine. Her proposed menu for the sixth night is complex and looks delightful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pickled Black-Eyed Peas<\/li>\n<li>Biokosso [a fish dish]<\/li>\n<li>Turkey with Heritage Stuffing<\/li>\n<li>Stewed Okra<\/li>\n<li>Baked Tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>Plain White Rice<\/li>\n<li>Herbed Cornbread<\/li>\n<li>Spicy Cranberry Chutney<\/li>\n<li>Killer Pecan Pie with Molasses Whipped Cream<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kwanzaa always begins on December 26, which this year is a Saturday, and ends on January 1.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While many of the books at Hoole Library are old and\/or rare, some are simply part of a special collection of materials which may include very recent publications.
