{"id":3084,"date":"2014-12-02T12:57:29","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T18:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/?p=3084"},"modified":"2014-12-02T12:57:29","modified_gmt":"2014-12-02T18:57:29","slug":"hidden-gem-fort-marion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2014\/12\/02\/hidden-gem-fort-marion\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidden Gem: Pictorial History of Fort Marion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lately, we&#8217;ve been combing through\u00a0Google Analytics data for our collections, and one thing it&#8217;s done is alert us to some popular items we didn&#8217;t know about, in part because they were not in particularly well-used\u00a0collections.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/18254\">Durst Family Papers<\/a> is a small collection of interesting but\u00a0awfully random\u00a0items, including an early <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/48963\">18th century British legal document<\/a>, a handwritten\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/48974\">knitting pattern<\/a>,\u00a0and a U.S.\u00a0Service Flag from WWI. There are\u00a0also several items pertaining to the 19th century\u00a0South, like\u00a0a hand-written version of the song &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/48975\">Dixie<\/a>,&#8221; a booklet entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/48979\">The South Did Not Fight to Hold Slaves<\/a>,&#8221; and a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/48965\">Confederate five dollar bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Something\u00a0that&#8217;s both Southern and pretty random is one of our more popular items: a\u00a01925\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/48978\">Pictorial History of Fort Marion<\/a>, a &#8220;souvenir or\u00a0St. Augustine[Florida] under three flags.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/48978\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000461\/0000021\/0001\/u0003_0000461_0000021_0001_2048.jpg\" alt=\"Cover, Pictorial History of Fort Marion, 1925\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The booklet, written under the direction of the local historical society, contains a written history of St. Augustine and the fort, which at various times was under Spanish, British, and American control (pages 3-5). In 1924, just before this booklet was printed, it was designated a National Monument. Later, it was transferred to the National Park Service, and it is\u00a0now known by its original Spanish name, Castillo de San Marcos.<\/p>\n<p>The booklet also describes the fort as it stood in 1925, including the powder magazine, the\u00a0&#8220;famous\u00a0secret dungeon,&#8221; something called a &#8220;hot shot oven,&#8221; and even a moat (pages 5-7, 16-18).<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s really interesting about the\u00a0booklet is a section of full-color\u00a0pictures, eight\u00a0pages with two images on each page,\u00a0to\u00a0accompany the descriptions.
