Cabaniss Papers Digitization Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.ua.edu\/libraries\/hoole\/cabaniss\" target=\"_blank\">NHPRC-funded project<\/a> which demonstrates a proposed solution to that problem:\u00a0 The <a title=\"Septimus D. Cabaniss Papers collection\" href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/18369\" target=\"_blank\">Septimus D. Cabaniss Papers<\/a> collection.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Description of Septimus D Cabaniss Papers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.ua.edu\/nhprc\" target=\"_blank\">This collection<\/a> (which concerns an attempt to free slaves via the final will of the owner) is dependent upon excellent finding aid descriptions to provide access to the content via searching.\u00a0 The digitized items are linked (by script) into the finding aid, under the folder which describes them.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Minimal MODS:  Cabaniss\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.ua.edu\/wiki\/digcoll\/index.php\/Minimal_MODS:_Cabaniss\" target=\"_blank\">Minimal metadata<\/a> is created for each intellectual item, using a boilerplate, a script, and the file names themselves.\u00a0 The latter incorporate box and folder number, as well as item sequence within the folder.<\/p>\n<p>By doing this, we enable access to <a title=\"Report of Mission to Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/12804\" target=\"_blank\">each item separately<\/a>, and also pave the way for metadata remediation in the future, and\/or item tagging by users.<\/p>\n<p>While we are delivering this (and <a title=\"Joshua Hill Foster papers\" href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/31127\" target=\"_blank\">similarly digitized collections<\/a>) via the <a title=\"Acumen Digital Library System\" href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/acumendls\/\" target=\"_blank\">Acumen software<\/a>, this is not required.\u00a0 We also developed support for <a title=\"Software for automated web delivery of large manuscript collections\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.ua.edu\/wiki\/digcoll\/index.php\/Software_For_You!\" target=\"_blank\">delivery of content<\/a> at <a title=\"samle of folder level access to content\" href=\"http:\/\/libcontent1.lib.ua.edu\/digital\/test\/testColl\/Folders\/testColl_314903.html\" target=\"_blank\">folder<\/a> and\/or <a title=\"Sample of item-level access\" href=\"http:\/\/libcontent1.lib.ua.edu\/digital\/test\/secondTest\/10617\/\" target=\"_blank\">item<\/a> level outside of any existing EAD delivery system.<\/p>\n<p>You can read <a title=\"Cabaniss project on UA Digital Services wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.ua.edu\/wiki\/digcoll\/index.php\/Cabaniss\" target=\"_blank\">more about this on our wiki<\/a>.\u00a0 Our entire project, including the oversight, consultants, and usability study, cost us about $1.50 per scan.\u00a0\u00a0 Now that\u00a0 the software is developed, it&#8217;s much cheaper.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A major impediment to digitizing large manuscript collections is\u00a0 the cost of item-level descriptions, to provide access to the content.
