On May 3, 1963, peaceful demonstrators, many of them teenagers, are beaten back in downtown Birmingham by fire hoses and police dogs.\u00a0 The extreme tactics, ordered by police commissioner Eugene “Bull” Connor brought international attention to Project C, the name given to civil rights demonstrations led by Martin Luther King Jr. and Fred Shuttlesworth.\u00a0 Here is an interview<\/a>, in which Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth discusses his role in the Civil Rights Movement and run-ins with police comissioner Bull Connor.<\/p>\n
