{"id":3697,"date":"2012-08-07T19:29:18","date_gmt":"2012-08-07T19:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/?p=998"},"modified":"2012-08-07T19:29:18","modified_gmt":"2012-08-07T19:29:18","slug":"adventures-in-geocoding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2012\/08\/07\/adventures-in-geocoding\/","title":{"rendered":"Adventures in geocoding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last November, I was excited to read a <a href=\"http:\/\/dlib.org\/dlib\/september11\/neatrour\/09neatrour.html\" target=\"_blank\">D-Lib article<\/a> on leveraging Google Map APIs to generate latitude\/longitude values from locations, then generating files which could be uploaded to create embeddable maps of content.  I explored and mapped out the processes necessary for us to do something similar, and analyzed the existing subject headings in our <a href=\"http:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\" target=\"_blank\">online holdings<\/a> to determine whether we had sufficient information captured in geographical subject tags. <\/p>\n<ul> My analysis revealed that we had two collections that had a wide dispersal of locations encoded in them: <\/p>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/18361\" target=\"_blank\">Woodward Family Photo collection<\/a>  which has 642 items tagged with 92 distinct geographical subjects;  and <\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/18296\" target=\"_blank\">Roland McMillan Harper Photo Collection<\/a> which has  8548 items tagged with 936 distinct geographical subjects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I have since extracted the subject headings from the latter collection and translated them into latitude\/longitude pairs, creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/kml\/documentation\/kmlreference\" target=\"_blank\">KML (Keyhole Markup Language) file<\/a> for the latter collection, and we&#8217;re debating how useful this would be for researchers.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you think? <\/strong> I have two versions online for review. One has <a href=\"http:\/\/libcontent1.lib.ua.edu\/~jlderidder\/geocodeTest.html\" target=\"blank\">red pointer icons<\/a> and the other has <a href=\"http:\/\/libcontent1.lib.ua.edu\/~jlderidder\/geocodeTest2.html\" target=\"blank\">a unique icon for each item<\/a> created from the images themselves.  (<em>Beware, this last one takes time to load!<\/em>)  <\/p>\n<p>If you do NOT have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/earth\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Google Earth<\/a> installed, the display <b><i>SHOULD<\/i><\/b> default to Google Maps for display.<\/p>\n<p>Do you find either display useful?
