{"id":3698,"date":"2012-08-09T14:14:45","date_gmt":"2012-08-09T14:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/?p=1005"},"modified":"2012-08-09T14:14:45","modified_gmt":"2012-08-09T14:14:45","slug":"early-history-of-the-university-of-alabama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2012\/08\/09\/early-history-of-the-university-of-alabama\/","title":{"rendered":"Early history of the University of Alabama?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve just loaded a box of the <a title=\"Guide to the Manly Family Papers\" href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/18320\" target=\"_blank\">Manly Family papers<\/a> into the <a title=\"Trancribe Special Collections from UA Libraries!\" href=\"http:\/\/transcribe.lib.ua.edu\" target=\"_blank\">transcription interface<\/a>, in the hopes that YOU would like to transcribe correspondence and diaries relating to the early history of the <a title=\"University of Alabama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ua.edu\" target=\"_blank\">University of Alabama<\/a>. Basil Manly, Sr. (1798-1868) was the second president of UA (1835-1855), a well-known educator AND a Baptist minister! The materials in this collection relate do nineteenth-century religion, education, and family. Here you may find sermons as well as letters and diary entries regarding slavery, secession, and the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>You never know what you&#8217;re going to find in these old collections. For example, <a title=\"Letter from Sarah M. Manly and Charles Manly to Basil Manly, Sr., July 4, 1858\" href=\"http:\/\/transcribe.lib.ua.edu\/items\/show\/1131\" target=\"_blank\">here&#8217;s an interesting letter<\/a> from Basil&#8217;s wife in 1858, describing a horrific medical treatment, and I quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;She had a great many convulsions both before and after the birth, was rubbed all over with mustard &amp; afterwards spirits of turpentine applied over the surface&#8211; so that her whole body must be pretty much excoriated. She has been delirious most of the time&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a title=\"Letter from Sarah M.
