Gaston served as a first lieutenant with the Independent 2nd Battalion Alabama Volunteers and as a private in the 10th Alabama Cavalry. \u00a0He wrote several letters to his parents, and sometimes his brothers and sisters, between 1859 and 1865. This collection of letters\u00a0give us a very personal look into the life of a Confederate\u00a0solider during the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/82460\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1819\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1819 aligncenter\" alt=\"u0003_0003915_0000010_0001_2048\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/04\/u0003_0003915_0000010_0001_20481-193x300.jpg\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>In this 1861 letter for example, Gaston describes some of the conditions that he and his men had to endure, such as drinking dirty water and fearing that it would cause them to become sick.\u00a0Unfortunately, his letters show that sickness was a dangerous problem that affected his group\u00a0harshly over the years.\u00a0 He also comments here on the\u00a0confusion\u00a0caused by getting conflicting orders from two different commanding officers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/82452\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1826\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1826 aligncenter\" alt=\"u0003_0003915_0000024_0001_2048\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/04\/u0003_0003915_0000024_0001_2048-227x300.jpg\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Gaston wrote a touching message to one of his sisters in this 1862 letter. He speaks of his affection for her and his hope that he would be able to return home to his family safely. He goes on to instruct her to make sure that a younger brother learns to write so he can also send Gaston letters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/82434\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1820\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1820 aligncenter\" alt=\"u0003_0003915_0000052_0001_2048\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/04\/u0003_0003915_0000052_0001_2048-188x300.jpg\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>This letter was written in 1864, when Gaston was a prisoner of war having been captured by Union\u00a0soldiers.
