Today marks the 150th anniversary<\/a> of the Battle of Chickamauga<\/a>, a strategic win for the Confederates — but at a terrible loss of life for both sides. Of the approximately 125,000 troops involved, over 34,000 (almost 30 percent!) were killed, wounded, or captured. It ranks as one of the costliest battles of the Civil War, second only to Gettysburg.<\/p>\n

One of our digitized diaries from the period was written by a soldier who participated in the battle and lived to tell the tale. You can read John A. Vaughn’s account<\/a> by clicking on the pages below, which have been transcribed here.<\/p>\n

Sept 20<\/em>
\nThe fight is general to day. we join our\u00a0command & Col Wade is placed\u00a0in Command of the Brigade. late in\u00a0the evening we reach “Lee & Gordons\u00a0Mills<\/a>“, on the Chickamauga creek.\u00a0on our right a heavy discharge &\u00a0musketry is heard. we are dismantled\u00a0and marched across the creek in the\u00a0direction of the enemys lines. we take\u00a0water very well. it is the first time I\u00a0have “taken water” in a long time.\u00a0we march on in double quick and take an ambulance & soon after a Hopsital with sick & wounded. John\u00a0[Jawes?] of the 34th Ala was in this Hospital\u00a0wounded and a prisoner, but we\u00a0released him & pushed on & took another\u00a0Hospital with sick and wounded, we\u00a0return to “Lee & Gordons Mills” &\u00a0Bivouac for the night. we get nothing\u00a0to eat, but our boys are cheerful, anxious\u00a0for the fight. we have to make the enemys comisarys our comisarys<\/em><\/p>\n

Sept 21st<\/em>
\nTo day we operate in the Chattanooga Valley. Wharton is in advance. he\u00a0attack the enemy & they flee & leave their\u00a0wagon train & some comisarys; which\u00a0the boys put to a good use. we followed<\/em>\u00a0[pg. 63]\u00a0in hast through the thick and disagreeable\u00a0dust but are unable to catch up. we\u00a0capture the wagon train & a great deal of plunder. some of the wagons\u00a0are burnt but the most of them are\u00a0safely carried out we return to “Lee &\u00a0Gordons Mills” & find Major Wright\u00a0who has brought something for us to eat,\u00a0but the Major got in too late to have “a\u00a0hand in the drawing”<\/em><\/p>\n

Sept 22<\/em>
\nWe pass over the Battleground and see the\u00a0mangled dead in every direction, some\u00a0one shot in the leg, some in the breast\u00a0and one poor fellow has his head\u00a0shot off completely & another is burnt\u00a0up caught from a burning fence. dead\u00a0horses are laying piled on the battle\u00a0field and I see a hog and black sheep dead. poor things they\u00a0ought to keep away from where man\u00a0meets in fearful combat. it is strange\u00a0that the most intelligent beings on earth\u00a0endowed with reason and sense cannot\u00a0settle disputes without resorting to\u00a0force and brute force the\u00a0enemy’s loss is great they have been driven in confusion from the field<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
