{"id":3770,"date":"2013-09-25T08:29:01","date_gmt":"2013-09-25T14:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/?p=2324"},"modified":"2013-09-25T08:29:01","modified_gmt":"2013-09-25T14:29:01","slug":"1892-baptist-hymnal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2013\/09\/25\/1892-baptist-hymnal\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidden Gem: 1892 Baptist hymnal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently stumbled upon an interesting item in the Manly Family papers manuscript collection: a hymn book from 120 years ago, with selections chosen by Basil Manly, Jr., a Baptist minister and educator.<\/p>\n<p>The book was published in the year of Manly&#8217;s death, perhaps as a tribute or memorial.While it doesn&#8217;t contain any music, just the words to the hymns, it does include a notation above each song indicating what kind of meter it has. For example, the lines in &#8220;Love Divine, All Love Excelling&#8221; alternate 8 and 7 syllables, as noted:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/09\/u0003_0000900_0000444_0028.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2328\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/09\/u0003_0000900_0000444_0028-1024x881.jpg\" alt=\"u0003_0000900_0000444_0028\" width=\"640\" height=\"550\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The book contains some still-familiar hymns, like &#8220;Nearer My God to Thee&#8221;\u00a0and &#8220;Blest Be the Tie That Binds,&#8221; and the Christmas songs &#8220;Hark the Herald Angels Sing&#8221; and &#8220;Joy to the World.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some song seem familiar but on closer inspection offer surprises. The popular hymn &#8220;Amazing Grace&#8221; is included here, but with a different final verse than we&#8217;re used to:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/09\/u0003_0000900_0000444_0059.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2325\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/09\/u0003_0000900_0000444_0059-1024x632.jpg\" alt=\"u0003_0000900_0000444_0059\" width=\"640\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/09\/u0003_0000900_0000444_0060.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2326\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2013\/09\/u0003_0000900_0000444_0060-1024x208.jpg\" alt=\"u0003_0000900_0000444_0060\" width=\"640\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, the verse we know as the last &#8212; beginning &#8220;When we&#8217;ve been there then thousand years&#8221; &#8212; is a later addition.<\/p>\n<p>To hear a couple of these songs performed, check out these recordings from the Harald Rohlig Organ Music collection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 16px\">&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/133741\">When I Survey the Wondrous Cross<\/a>,&#8221; sung acapella<\/span><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/133742\">O God Our Help in Ages Past<\/a>,&#8221; variations performed on the organ<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently stumbled upon an interesting item in the Manly Family papers manuscript collection: a hymn book from 120 years ago, with selections chosen by Basil Manly, Jr., a Baptist minister and educator.
