Though a lot of them help record news about the family or about important current events, many are simply interesting pieces of writing someone wanted to remember. <\/p>\n<p>Poetry was a pretty common interest for late 19th c. newspaper clippers, if our collections are any indication. Especially thought-provoking or inspirational poems were often gathered together with other quotes into a single section, with a title like &#8220;Thought for the Day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Though the poems might be written by local celebrities, they were more frequently culled from previously published work by popular poets of the day, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/solr?q=eugene+AND+field&amp;tab=manuscript\">Eugene Field<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/solr?q=helen+AND+hunt+AND+jackson&amp;tab=manuscript\">Helen Hunt Jackson<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/solr?q=ella+AND+wheeler+AND+wilcox&amp;tab=manuscript\">Ella Wheeler Wilcox<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/95580\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000313\/0001015\/u0003_0000313_0001015_2048.jpg\" alt=\"ella wheeler wilcox poem\" height=\"75%\" width=\"75%\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still other poems come from writers many of us still read in English class. For example, Romantic poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was still apparently quite popular around the turn of the 20th century:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/95526\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000313\/0000957\/u0003_0000313_0000957_2048.jpg\" alt=\"wordsworth poem\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As was Percy Shelley (1792-1822). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2014\/01\/u0003_0000313_0000937.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2014\/01\/u0003_0000313_0000937.png\" alt=\"Shelley, from Prometheus Unbound\" width=\"546\" height=\"197\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2557\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is an abridged version of the final stanza of his verse drama <i>Prometheus Unbound<\/i> (1820), given in its entirety here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To suffer woes which Hope thinks infinite;<br \/>\nTo forgive wrongs darker than Death or Night;<br \/>\nTo defy Power, which seems Omnipotent;<br \/>\nTo love, and bear; to hope, till Hope creates<br \/>\nFrom its own wreck the thing it contemplates;<br \/>\nNeither to change nor falter nor repent;<br \/>\nThis, like thy glory, Titan! is to be<br \/>\nGood, great and joyous, beautiful and free;<br \/>\nThis is alone Life; Joy, Empire, and Victory!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Victorian poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1882), is perhaps the most common among the clipped. The 1847 poem given below is actually titled &#8220;Tears, Idle Tears,&#8221; but the heading it was given for the newspaper is maybe more descriptive:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/95518\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000313\/0000949\/u0003_0000313_0000949_2048.jpg\" alt=\"tennyson poem\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fellow Victorian Robert Browning (1812-1889) is known for verse that was the opposite of uplifting and inspirational, so it&#8217;s not surprising that the poem we find as a &#8220;Thought for the Day&#8221; is among the best of the minority. &#8220;Rabbi Ben Ezra&#8221; (1864) so moved John Lennon, for example, that he wrote a love song based on it, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grow_Old_With_Me\">Grow Old With Me<\/a>&#8220;. This is the poem&#8217;s first stanza:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/95578\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000313\/0001013\/u0003_0000313_0001013_2048.jpg\" alt=\"robert browning poem\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Robert&#8217;s wife, fellow poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), is probably even more famous, especially for this sonnet, number 43 of her <i>Sonnets from the Portuguese<\/i> (1850):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/95531\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000313\/0000962\/u0003_0000313_0000962_2048.jpg\" alt=\"elizabeth barrett browning poem\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Popular American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), best known for &#8220;Paul Revere&#8217;s Ride&#8221; and <i>The Song of Hiawatha<\/i>, also pops up from time to time, as seen in this lesser-known 1878 poem:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/95529\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000313\/0000960\/u0003_0000313_0000960_2048.jpg\" alt=\"longfellow poem\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rudyard Kipling of <i>Jungle Book<\/i> fame is represented by &#8220;The Vampire&#8221; inspired by a painting by artist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Burne-Jones\">Philip Burne-Jones<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/95576\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0003\/0000313\/0001011\/u0003_0000313_0001011_2048.jpg\" alt=\"kipling poem\" width=\"75%\" height=\"75%\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kipling&#8217;s poem (and Burne-Jones&#8217;s painting) came out in 1897, bringing us up to within a few years of when these works appeared in the newspapers they were clipped from. It reminds us that late 19th and early 20th century folks found real, everyday value in poetry, from the tried and true to more recent offerings. They held familiar lines in their hearts the same way we collect song lyrics or movie quotes.
