Acumen’s simple one-box search is pretty robust, searching multiple fields by default, but what if you need to pinpoint a specific field in the record? In the\u00a0second in our series of posts on searching our digital repository,\u00a0Acumen<\/a>, we\u00a0discuss searching by field — how to enter that kind of search\u00a0into\u00a0the box and why you’d even want to.<\/p>\n

How do I do it?<\/h2>\n

The format for fielded searching in Acumen is actually fairly\u00a0simple. Enter it in\u00a0the search box like this:<\/p>\n

field:keyword<\/em><\/p>\n

Here are some examples:<\/p>\n

title:fountain<\/strong>
\nabstract:sermon<\/strong>
\ndescription:classroom<\/strong>
\ndate:1917<\/strong>
\nsubject:abolition<\/strong>
\ngenre:reciept<\/strong>
\ncreator:shakespeare<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can use any of the fields shown above to do a limited\u00a0search.<\/p>\n

If you want to include more than one keyword<\/em>, format your search like this:<\/p>\n

field:(keyword AND keyword)<\/em>
\ngenre:(christmas AND cards)<\/strong>
\ndate:(june AND 1863)<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you want to use more than one field<\/em> in one search, format it like this:<\/p>\n

field:keyword AND field:keyword<\/em>
\ntitle:cantata AND creator:handel<\/strong>
\nsubject:boxing AND description:match<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why would I do it?<\/h2>\n

Putting a single word in the box and searching isn’t a bad plan, but like with limiting by format<\/a>, limiting by field can help narrow down a large set of results.<\/p>\n

For example, the\u00a0keyword\u00a0legal<\/strong> can come up in a variety of places in a record. A simple\u00a0search for that keyword yields 6417 results, but things look pretty different\u00a0when you do a fielded search. You’ll see the number of results below the search box area, on the left:<\/p>\n

In another example, the keyword\u00a0time<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>brings up 1185 results. Here’s what it looks like in different fields:<\/p>\n

In general, using\u00a0multiple keywords can get you more focused results, especially if you put AND<\/b> between them. (The default is to look for one word OR<\/strong> the other.)\u00a0<\/span>Using multiple keywords in a limited search<\/em> is even better, either within one field or between different\u00a0fields.<\/p>\n

football game<\/strong> = 679 results
\nfootball AND game<\/strong> = 183 results
\ntitle:(football AND game)<\/strong> = 104 results<\/p>\n

This is especially true when you’re dealing with very common words and phrases.<\/p>\n

The key to searching in a library catalogue or database\u00a0is the old adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Specifically, try different things. One strategy is to use\u00a0different words and phrases for the same concept, but you should also consider limiting your search to a particular field. In Acumen, it’s simple: just enter\u00a0field:term<\/em>.<\/p>\n
