{"id":3798,"date":"2014-06-24T11:21:02","date_gmt":"2014-06-24T17:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/?p=2825"},"modified":"2014-06-24T11:21:02","modified_gmt":"2014-06-24T17:21:02","slug":"3d-dig-project-testing-phase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2014\/06\/24\/3d-dig-project-testing-phase\/","title":{"rendered":"3D Digitization Project: testing phase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our Digitization Manager, Jeremiah, has been working on a pretty exciting project, and we thought we&#8217;d share some pictures from the testing phase.<\/p>\n<p>Late last year, we\u00a0got a grant from UA Libraries to develop\u00a0a\u00a0digitizing process for relief objects, including an\u00a0inexpensive apparatus used to facilitate the\u00a0image capture\u00a0(see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/2014\/02\/26\/adventures-in-3d-printing\/\">these<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/2014\/03\/03\/more-adventures-in-3d-printing\/\">posts<\/a> about making the\u00a0components) and a Ruby program\u00a0that creates the 3D files. The project is now in the testing phase.<\/p>\n<p>For my first test run last week, we\u00a0chose one of the large keys that used to be in the possession of our <a href=\"http:\/\/lib.ua.edu\/libraries\/hoole\/aboutHoole\">special collection library<\/a>&#8216;s namesake, W. S. Hoole. (Thank you, Associate Dean Mary Bess Paluzzi!) They&#8217;re not only cool\u00a0shapes to work with, but\u00a0they also have some nice\u00a0textures:<\/p>\n\n<p>In Jeremiah&#8217;s process, dozens of shots of an object are\u00a0taken and\u00a0composited together. To make those captures with our usual mounted-camera digitization setup, we&#8217;ve added a\u00a0secondary\u00a0apparatus, one with a\u00a0mask\u00a0that moves back and forth over the object, targeting\u00a0portions of it\u00a0for capture:<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-3798 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2016\/02\/22\/the-international-legacy-of-harper-lee\/mockingbird-covers\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2016\/02\/mockingbird-covers-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-2-2833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2016\/02\/mockingbird-covers-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/files\/2016\/02\/mockingbird-covers-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt>\n\t\t\t\t<dd class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-2-2833'>\n\t\t\t\tCovers from (left to right) 1962, 1974, 1982, 1995, 2010\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl>\n\t\t\t<br style='clear: both' \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Most of what I learned this go-around was how to set up the object for\u00a0digitization, orienting it\u00a0to\u00a0the apparatus. Here it is on a platform under the apparatus (with mask removed):<\/p>\n\n<p>Once the object\u00a0is in place, it can&#8217;t be moved.\u00a0Instead, everything else moves, structuring the way light is cast onto the item:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The position\u00a0of the apparatus changes\u00a0after each\u00a0pass over the object. At minimum, we shoot the object from two different orientations, usually three. (If you look at the wide shots above up close, you&#8217;ll see circular\u00a0position marks on the table.)<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0position of the opening &#8212; or aperture &#8212; in the green mask is\u00a0moved in increments during the digitization process, so that we capture\u00a0multiple different views of the object through the aperture.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2014\/06\/photo06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2831\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2014\/06\/photo06.jpg\" alt=\"photo06\" width=\"2427\" height=\"1866\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Why is the mask\u00a0bright green? For exactly the reason you might expect &#8212; to use\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chroma_key\">green-screen<\/a>\u00a0process. It&#8217;s not too\u00a0different from how actors are shot in front of a green background so computer-generated effects can be added in\u00a0around them. In this case, the green signals to the Ruby software\u00a0which\u00a0portions of the image should\u00a0be\u00a0cut out &#8212; namely, the parts that aren&#8217;t the slice of the object.<\/p>\n<p>After all the capture is done, the\u00a0images are combined into a\u00a0whole. It looks like this, before we map a color shot\u00a0onto it:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2014\/06\/hoole_key_disp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2837\" src=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/files\/2014\/06\/hoole_key_disp.jpg\" alt=\"hoole_key_disp\" width=\"1000\" height=\"446\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/2014\/07\/03\/3d-digitization-project-testing-phase-continued\/\">subsequent post<\/a>, we&#8217;ll talk how the compositing technique works. It has a lot to do with lighting.
