Last week<\/a>, we told you about a test of our Digitization Manager’s relief digitization process, under development thanks to a UA Libraries’ Innovation Grant.<\/p>\n

The project:\u00a0a process\u00a0to capture relief data using (1)\u00a0a regular mounted\u00a0digital camera<\/strong> setup, (2) a piece of simple secondary\u00a0hardware<\/strong>, (3) the ubiquitous photo editing program Adobe Photoshop<\/strong>, and (4)\u00a0some homegrown\u00a0open-source software<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For the last few months, Jeremiah’s been simultaneously working on designing the hardware (and in a way that can be replicated by others), writing the software (a Ruby script), and working out the logistics of the technique. While last week’s post<\/a>\u00a0focused on how the captures are made, this one will focus a bit more on how and why the technique works.<\/p>\n

Light and Dark<\/h2>\n

You might be wondering, Why do you need an extra piece of hardware? The short answer:\u00a0light. The relief capture process depends on using brightness\u00a0values to determine height, and the hardware Jeremiah built\u00a0helps in this aspect.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The movable mask (green) makes\u00a0the mounted lights illuminate an\u00a0object in just the right way, as it comes into view through the opening in the mask. The object, down below the mask, is being shot from above and illuminated at an angle:\"apperture-lighting\"<\/a>Where both lights cross and hit the object, the brightness values will be highest; where neither light hits the object, the brightness values will be lowest. Dozens of slices of the object are shot, each being illuminated in this way.<\/p>\n

Height and Depth<\/h2>\n

When the slices are layered\u00a0into a single\u00a0image, called a height map<\/strong>, the composite brightness values can be used\u00a0to create a sense of the object’s height and depth.\u00a0\u00a0Here’s what the height map looks like for Mr. Hoole’s\u00a0key:<\/p>\n

\"hoole_key_disp\"<\/a>Of course, this is in black and white, since it’s only using the\u00a0lights and darks of the brightness channel. Color values return when a single, un-sliced shot\u00a0of the object, called a texture map<\/strong>, is\u00a0combined with the height map\u00a0in Jeremiah’s software. The software\u00a0transforms the\u00a0data into a .x3d file so the object\u00a0can be viewed in all its\u00a0lovely dimensions.<\/p>\n

The first time we processed the\u00a0key, though,\u00a0the dimensions weren’t so lovely:<\/p>\n

\"hoole_key_no_blur\"<\/a>Looks kind of fuzzy, no? We picked up so much detail from the surface of the key, so many light and dark tones, that it appears to have wildly variable height and depth, even from pixel to pixel.<\/p>\n

The solution in this case was to blur the height map\u00a0a bit:<\/p>\n

Okay — so it was blurred what looks like a lot<\/em>, but it was necessary to tame\u00a0the height values. The texture map, however, wasn’t blurred, so the overall detail is still good:<\/p>\n

(You might also notice the background doesn’t show up in this 3D rendering. This wasn’t\u00a0because of the blur applied but because Jeremiah\u00a0manually blacked out the background areas, now that\u00a0he was satisfied with the way the rest turned out.)<\/p>\n

Jeremiah’s\u00a0still in the process of testing the technique and tweaking the software and hardware designs where needed. You’ll see\u00a0more about this project once it’s out of the testing phase and\u00a0ready for its public debut. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
