{"id":3807,"date":"2014-10-09T13:05:35","date_gmt":"2014-10-09T19:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/?p=3046"},"modified":"2014-10-09T13:05:35","modified_gmt":"2014-10-09T19:05:35","slug":"goodbye-corolla-goodbye-1950s-1960s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/coolathoole\/2014\/10\/09\/goodbye-corolla-goodbye-1950s-1960s\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye, Corolla, Goodbye: 1950s-1960s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/digitalservices\/2014\/09\/30\/goodbye-corolla-goodbye-1890s-1900s\/\">our look at Corollas of the past<\/a>, these two volumes from the 1950s and 1960s are both in Acumen, and they document a rapidly changing student body and new student attitudes.<\/p>\n<h2>1959<\/h2>\n<p>With the Space Race now underway, the <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/133689\">1959<\/a> yearbook editors used imagery of rockets and space to anchor their introduction to the book, as well as to adorn the cover.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/133690\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001959\/0001\/u0002_0000002_0001959_0001_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1959 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35220\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001959\/0004\/u0002_0000002_0001959_0004_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1959 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But closer to home, the students were still students &#8212; and the Corolla could be a little bit bolder about covering their activities:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35220\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001959\/0018\/u0002_0000002_0001959_0018_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1959 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lest you think UA was all about football or the Greek system, there were also a lot of artistic endeavors being pursued:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35220\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001959\/0071\/u0002_0000002_0001959_0071_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1959 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But probably the most important event of the year, even if they didn&#8217;t yet know just how important, was Bear Bryant&#8217;s first year as coach:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35220\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001959\/0113\/u0002_0000002_0001959_0113_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1959 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>1968<\/h2>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/133691\">volume<\/a> from the late 1960s found UA in the thick of a cultural revolution, reflected in the topics discussed at the Emphasis symposium&#8230;and in the protesters outside:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35176\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001968\/0025\/u0002_0000002_0001968_0025_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1968 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Depending on when the book went into print, Martin Luther King Jr. was either a force to be reckoned with or a recent martyr. Here he is as part of a collage printed in the book:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35176\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001968\/0076\/u0002_0000002_0001968_0076_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1968 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fields like engineering were really coming to the forefront:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35176\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001968\/0111\/u0002_0000002_0001968_0111_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1968 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly,\u00a0sports (and color photos!) were a major part of the book:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35176\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001968\/0211\/u0002_0000002_0001968_0211_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1968 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our concept of beauty and fashion had changed a bit, seen here in a Corolla Beauty that the 1938 girls would&#8217;ve considered scantily clad:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/purl.lib.ua.edu\/35176\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/acumen.lib.ua.edu\/content\/u0002\/0000002\/0001968\/0286\/u0002_0000002_0001968_0286_2048.jpg\" alt=\"1968 Corolla\" width=\"70%\" height=\"70%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the\u00a0student body was also undergoing a change.
