Memo requesting gay student union sponsorship
Title Memo Sent to University of Alabama Faculty Requesting Gay Student Union Sponsorship
Date 1983
Description University of Alabama English professor David Miller agreed to be the faculty sponsor for students who sought to establish UA’s first officially recognized LGBTQ student group, the Gay Student Union, in 1983. Before the students presented their official request, Miller sent out a memo to UA faculty to ask for co-sponsors to strengthen the group’s position. “Nobody is asking for a commitment of time. It’s your good name we want to drag through the mud,” Miller wrote in the memo.
Donor Materials in this collection were given by multiple donors, including David Miller, Annabel Stephens, Rose Gladney, and Joshua Burford.
