Description<\/td>\nAbout one hundred people gathered on February 16, 2000, for a memorial service on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham to remember Billy Jack Gaither on the first anniversary of his death. This description of the service was included in a multi-page “Memorial Card” that was distributed at the time. The card was prepared and signed by individuals from a number of religious congregations and community organizations; the ceremony included a statement by Reverend Marge Ragona, then pastor of Birmingham’s Metropolitan Community Church, who had organized a memorial service there for Gaither in 1999.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
