One part of chapter two that stuck out to me was the\ndiscussion of the banking method. While I have never really liked the lecture\nform of teaching (the professor telling me everything I need to know), this\nchapter made me think about it in a different way. As Freire points out, \u201cknowledge\nis a gift bestowed by those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon those\nwhom they consider to know nothing\u201d (pg. 72). This way of thinking, however,\nprojects an obsolete ignorance onto others, which is a characteristic of\noppression. Before reading this, I never thought to consider how this form or\nstyle of teaching (the banking method) could turn into a form of oppression\nassuming that the professor knows everything, and the students know nothing. This\nmethod has continued, according to Freire, continues to be used as a way to\nadapt students to the world of oppression. The cycle can continue because\nstudents are just funneled into it. People who are put through this process \u201coften\ndo not perceive its true significance or its dehumanizing power\u201d (pg. 78).\nAccording to Freire, this can be combated with the use of more dialogue and discussion\nin the classroom. By bringing students into the dialogue, they are not simply\njust being filled up by the professor, but they are learning to feel and\nunderstand things for themselves and relate what they are learning to their own\nexperiences. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
