{"id":638,"date":"2019-07-16T15:18:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T15:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/renovations\/?p=638"},"modified":"2019-07-19T21:05:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-19T21:05:11","slug":"gorgas-core-support-project-update-7-15-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/apps.lib.ua.edu\/blogs\/renovations\/2019\/07\/16\/gorgas-core-support-project-update-7-15-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Gorgas Core Support Project Update 7\/15\/2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>We&#8217;re in the eleventh week of renovations and things are moving along great! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently three separate renovation projects going on\nsimultaneously in Gorgas Library.&nbsp; They are the Gorgas Core Support\nProject (Elevators and Restrooms Project), the Second Floor Meeting Rooms\nProject, and the JavaCity Project.&nbsp; Here are some brief updates on each of\nthose projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gorgas Core Support Project:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Elevators<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Demolition of the staff elevator shaft is complete, but it is\npossible that the shaft will need to be enlarge an additional 2.5 inches to the\nnorth of the existing staff.&nbsp; That decision will be finalized this\nweek.&nbsp; The next step will be to install the steel supports for the\nelevator shaft which will involve bringing in large steel beams, inserting them\ninto the shaft, and welding them together on site.&nbsp; The welders will be\nusing all required precautions during this process and are required to use high\nvelocity exhaust fans in order to minimize odors from the shaft.&nbsp; Once the\nsupport system is in place, installation of the car and equipment will\nbegin.&nbsp; The staff elevator renovation should be complete and it should be\noperational in January\/February, 2020.&nbsp; This completion date is behind\nschedule due to the many complications the building has presented to the\ncontractor during the demolition process.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Once the staff elevator renovation is complete and that elevator\nis fully functional, all floors and spaces within Gorgas Library will be\nassigned a new number.&nbsp; Renumbering all floors and rooms will require us\nto carefully consider all publications, instructions, and websites that include\ninformation about locations that will need to be changed.&nbsp; The architect\nis going to provide a form that can be used to facilitate the room and floor\nre-numbering transition.&nbsp; The form will list old room numbers and\ncorresponding new room numbers.&nbsp; As soon as I have this information, I\nwill share it with everyone. <\/li><li>After the staff elevator project is complete, renovation of one of\nthe passenger elevators will begin.&nbsp; After that project is complete, the\nother passenger elevator will be renovated.&nbsp; The elevator project is\nexpected to be completed by the end of next summer (2020).&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Restrooms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Demolition of the first floor restroom is complete and that\nrestroom has been changed over to the new plumbing system.&nbsp; Currently, the\nanticipated completion date for the first floor restroom is mid to late\nAugust.&nbsp; <\/li><li>Demolition is underway in the second floor restroom.&nbsp; The\nwork in the second floor restroom will not be as complicated as the work was on\nfirst floor and should not take as long to complete.&nbsp; In addition to the\nwork on the restroom on second floor, the elevator lobby, and Circulation\nServices Desk will also be renovated.&nbsp; The Circulation Desk has been\ntemporarily relocated to the Pearce Foyer and will remain there until the work\nhas been completed in the second floor lobby and restroom areas.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Second Floor Meeting Rooms Project:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Demolition work in Gorgas 205 and 205C is complete. The ceiling\ngrid has been installed, and conduit is being installed for electrical and data\nlines.&nbsp; The locations for the two video walls have been finalized so that\nprep work can begin for the installation of those two systems.&nbsp; <\/li><li>The work for the Meeting Rooms Project is on schedule and the\nanticipated completion date is November 1, 2019.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JavaCity Project:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The JavaCity Project is scheduled for completion by August\n15.&nbsp; New sheetrock has been installed, new ceiling grids have been put\ninto place, the plumbing is complete, and everything is in place for the new\nkiosk that will be provided by a third-party vendor.&nbsp; The plan includes\ntwo self-service sales points for \u201cgrab and go\u201d items, and a check out point\nfor custom drink orders.&nbsp; This arrangement should eliminate the long lines\nthat we previously experienced in JavaCity.&nbsp; Once JavaCity reopens, they\nwill offer an expanded menu with more food options.&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re in the eleventh week of renovations and things are moving along great!
