War is commonly associated with bombs and bullets, but in\nWWI, the front lines were extended to the kitchen. Propaganda posters turned gardens\ninto \u201cmunitions plants,\u201d and food was transformed into \u201cammunition.\u201d Long\nbefore the United States officially entered the war, posters implored citizens\nto do their part by consuming less, and selecting alternate products that\nallowed for needed provisions to be shipped to allies overseas. The United\nStates Food Administration, under the direction of Herbert Hoover, repeatedly\ndeclared that \u201cfood will win the war,\u201d a message directed mainly toward women tasked\nwith purchasing groceries and preparing meals. As the posters contained in the\ncollection demonstrate, the simple act of deciding what to eat for breakfast became\na test of patriotism.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
