WWI was publicly framed by the government as a moral conflict in defense of democracy, a justification that Paus appropriates visually with the inclusion of Lady Liberty’s torch, a symbol of freedom, and verbally through the warning, “Save your Child from autocracy and poverty.” Standing beside Liberty’s illuminating torch is a blond-haired, blue-eyed child that is naked of all clothing except shoes and socks. While the verbal message of the poster is predominantly clear, the unexpected decision to include the nude child is rather perplexing.

Copyright and Terms

Images are in the public domain or protected under U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code), and both types may be used for research and private study.
