We’ll offer a series of NVivo workshops in Gorgas Library this semester. Registration is not required.
NVivo software supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It is used to organize, analyze, and find insights in unstructured data: text in documents and PDFs, audio, video, images, spreadsheets, web pages, social media data, and web content. The software allows users to work with large amounts of data in many languages and supports a wide range of research methodologies. NVivo is found on computers throughout the Libraries; students, faculty, and staff can also download the software at no cost via the Office of Information Technology.
Check out the NVivo feature list or watch a brief introductory video to get a better idea of what NVivo is and how you might use it.
NVivo 11 Overview
- Thursday, Sept. 22, 9:30-10:30 a.m., 104 Gorgas Library
This demonstration session will provide an introduction to and overview of NVivo 11 Pro for Windows and NVivo for Mac: what NVivo is, how it is used, the NVivo workspace, and key concepts. Hands-on learning opportunities are offered in our other NVivo workshops.
NVivo 11: Working with Text
- Thursday, Sept. 29, 9:30-10:30 a.m., 104 Gorgas Library
In this hands-on session, participants will work with text: importing Word documents, text files, and PDFs; coding sources and managing nodes; and running basic queries and visualizations.
NVivo 11: Working with Audio, Video, and Images
- Thursday, Oct. 6, 9:30-10:30 a.m., 104 Gorgas Library
In this hands-on session, participants will work with audio, video, and images: importing images, audio files, video files, and YouTube content; coding and annotating these sources; and running basic queries and visualizations.
NVivo 11: Analysis & Visualization
- Thursday, Nov. 3, 9:30-10:30 a.m., 104 Gorgas Library
In this hands-on session, participants will explore coded data with text and coding queries and visualization tools such as maps, charts, and diagrams.
NVivo 11: Working with Social Media Data
- Thursday, Nov. 10, 9:30-10:30 a.m., 104 Gorgas Library
In this hands-on session, participants will use the NCapture browser extension to capture Facebook posts and comments, Twitter data, YouTube comments, and web pages and import these sources into NVivo. Additional social network analysis features available with NVivo Plus will also be shared.
NVivo 11: Working with Survey Data
- Thursday, Nov. 17, 9:30-10:30 a.m., 104 Gorgas Library
In this hands-on session, participants will work with a dataset containing survey results: gathering responses to each survey question at a theme node, creating case nodes to represent survey participants, and running basic queries (such as gathering responses based on demographic values).
NVivo for Literature Review
- Thursday, Dec. 1, 9:30-10:30 a.m., 104 Gorgas Library
In this hands-on session, participants will explore how NVivo can support literature review: importing articles and creating external sources for books, classifying sources and assigning attributes like author or publication date, coding content to gather material by theme, and using Word Frequency and Matrix Coding queries to identify themes and examine their coverage. Exchanging data between NVivo and reference management tools will also be discussed.
