On May 22, University Libraries faculty and staff celebrated the renovation kickoff with coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. They also added their hand print to one of the construction barriers on 1st floor (stop by to check it out!).
Rooms 102 and 104 (Computer Lab) remain closed for the installation of a new sewer line and fresh water supply line.
Partitions are going up around the new staff elevator from the basement to the 5th floor.
A partition is in place around rooms 113A and 104A in preparation for the restroom expansion.
Java City remains closed. Vending machines with cold drinks and snacks are located on the first floor next to room 100.
A partition for the renovation in Java City will go up today and tomorrow. This partition and the staff elevator partition will block the entrance to the Music Library.
Anyone needing assess to the Whisper Booths in the Music Library, please seek assistance at the Information Desk.
The Java City partition will also block the south stairwells to the second floor. Please use the public elevators to access the upper floors.
Furniture is being removed on the second floor next to the Circulation Desk in preparation for renovation of the elevator lobby, adjacent areas, and Gorgas 205. This furniture is being moved to 4M for additional seating.
Study space and computers are located on the third floor. Additional study spaces are located on 2M and 4M.
On Tuesday, May 14, Gorgas 102 and 104 (computer lab) will be closed due to construction work. There is not a definitive timeline for this part of the project. Please check with the Information Desk or Circulation desk for alternative study spaces.
Construction barricades are being installed around the service elevator on first floor. The barricades will be constructed on all floors over the next 2 weeks.
Vending machines with drinks and snacks are located on the first floor to the right of the Capstone Drive entrance.
The construction crews are on site and ready to begin work in Gorgas Library!
For the first few days, they will be busy setting up their workspaces and fencing in areas on the Capstone Drive side of the building for dumpsters, a place to store materials, and areas that will be used for carrying debris out of the building.
UA personnel and furniture vendors are in the building today to move computers, relocate some student work stations in 102 and 104, and relocate some furniture. There will be a final pre-construction meeting tomorrow and in a few days we will have an official timeline for the various phases of the work on the Core Project (elevators and restrooms).
Installation of the steel beams began on May 1! The wall panels are expected to arrive mid-May. The project remains on schedule and should be completed by fall 2019.
The Libraries are allowing online renewals this Spring due to construction in Gorgas.

Due to the upcoming renovation, Gorgas 205 will not be available for reservation after April 19.
The room will also be unavailable to students as a study space during Study and Finals week. Please check the Libraries website for other quiet study spaces.
UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES MAKES EXCEPTION FOR REQUIRED JUNE 1 PHYSICAL RENEWALS
University Libraries circulation policy requires faculty members and graduate students to physically renew all books before June 1.
Due to the Gorgas Library Renovation Project beginning May 6, faculty and graduate students will be allowed to renew items due June 1 online.
Renew items before or on June 1 to avoid overdue blocks. Some items cannot be renewed online and must be brought into the library for renewal.
