Description | Paul Stahr’s 1918 poster “Be Patriotic” features Columbia, the allegorical female figure of America, with arms outstretched, calling for viewers to pledge to conserve food for the war effort. Whereas many artists depict Columbia as a warrior-goddess, Stahr’s depiction is far more sexualized, a strategy likely used to attract the attention of heterosexual men passing by. Draped in the stars and stripes of the American flag, Columbia’s emotionless expression communicates the severity of the situation as she stands waiting for assistance. Beneath her, featured in a large, red and blue font, are the words “Be Patriotic- sign your country’s pledge to save the food.” In pairing the colors of the font with the colors of Columbia, the image draws a distinct connection between Columbia’s needs and the text beneath. Through symbols of national pride and patriotism, she is beseeching the viewer to help her and the country through the conservation of food. |
