Description Simplistic on its surface, this British poster contains a mysterious charm. On the one hand, the poster echoes the general propensity of British propaganda to prefer words over images, and yet the text of the poster has an undeniably visual flare. On a purple background, one of the rarest colors in posters during this time period, is a message written in cursive asking viewers to “Be a Sportsman, and lend a hand to the lads at the front.” Connecting war to “sportsmanship” was a persuasive appeal uniquely adapted for British and Australian audiences where hunting and gentlemanly customs were highly regarded. The unique lettering and angling of the words “They want your help!” almost takes the shape of a personalized love letter, and yet, there is no overt author or specific directive on how best to support the troops on the front.
