Title Cardinal Mercier
Creator George Illion
Date 1917
Format 20.5 x 28 in
Description This poster created by George Illion for the U.S. Food Administration is part of a series aimed at persuading viewers to change their dietary habits in support of the war effort. In the series, three of which are part of this collection, Illion targets specific ethnic groups by including the likenesses and words of culturally relevant figures. In this instance, the poster cites a plea from Désiré-Joseph Mercier, a Belgian cardinal and vocal critic of the German occupation of Belgium, to “Eat less wheat-meat-fats and sugar” so that they could be sent to the needy overseas.
