Title | Pro Patria! |
Creator | H. Devitt Welsh |
Date | 1917 |
Format | 28 x 42 |
Description | “Pro Patria!” the Latin phrase meaning “for one’s country,” punctuates H. Devitt Welsh’s poster calling for viewers to “JOIN” the Army. Many WWI posters glorify mechanized innovations, such as airplanes and warships, but Welsh’s poster exhibits a more naturalized, nostalgic perspective by illustrating two white men on horseback bearing a U.S. and Army flag in perfect symmetry. The United States Calvary was a celebrated branch of the Army, and while mounted units were largely unsuccessful in WWI from a military perspective, the majestic animals remained an important symbol of honor and prestige. |
