Description | Fred G. Cooper was an American cartoonist, and Executive Board member of the government’s Committee on Public Information. This poster is part of a series Cooper produced for the U.S. Food Administration to change the everyday consumption habits of its audience, most likely women given cultural expectations of the period that women were responsible for shopping and cooking. In this particular campaign, simplicity and clarity are dominant visual strategies to persuade. The poster contains only three colors, states an unmistakable message, and can communicate from multiple distances given the varying sizes of text. However, without an image to communicate the information, it is possible that the poster would have struggled to gain audience attention, especially in busy, image-centered locations such as the grocery store. |
