Title Save a Loaf
Creator Frederic G. Cooper
Date 1917
Format 21 x 29 in
Description Fred G. Cooper was an American cartoonist, and Executive Board member of the government’s Committee on Public Information. Cooper created a series of posters for the U.S. Food Administration, three of which are in this collection, to persuade viewers to change consumption habits in support of the war effort. When the United States officially entered WWI, the nation became responsible for not only feeding its own soldiers, but also providing supplies for the Allies. As demonstrated in other contexts, Cooper was a talented artist capable of producing sophisticated images, but this particular poster’s persuasive impact comes from its clean simplicity. The poster contains only three colors, states an unmistakable message, and pairs the text “Save a loaf a week” with an image of a hand cutting a loaf of bread. Although this poster might not be the most moving image in the collection, it efficiently communicates information deemed important by the government, which is a fundamental objective in WWI propaganda.
