Description Although this recruitment poster for the U.S. Marine Corps is not signed, there are several pieces of evidence that indicate it was illustrated by F.C. Yohn. Subtle differences in setting exist; nevertheless, other posters in this collection accredited to Yohn similarly depict soldiers on a beach with the flags of the United States and Marine Corps prominently displayed in the center. Furthermore, other Yohn posters contain the same bold, green font above and below the image. Unique to this poster are the two black and white sketches on each side of the fully colored illustration of the marching soldiers on the beach. The two sketches, one of a soldier holding a rifle on land and the second of a soldier standing beside a cannon on a ship, connect to the text below that states “FIRST IN DEFENSE ON LAND OR SEA.” Unlike other related images in the collection, this poster contains the specific address at the bottom where persuaded viewers could embody the “SPIRIT OF 1917” by enlisting.
