Description This recruitment poster by H. Devitt Welsh for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, the branch responsible for managing war related communications, is wildly unconventional with regard to its use of color. Most propaganda artists experimented with color as a means to grab attention and evoke audience emotion, but Welsh abandons the typical patriotic red, white, and blue for otherworldly hues of brown, pink, yellow, green, peach, and blue. The poster shows three signal corpsmen diligently performing different duties. In the background, a lookout stands tall on a battery wagon, peering through binoculars, perhaps receiving information communicated through signal flags. At his feet, two men sit on the ground, one writing in a notebook, and the other listening through a portable radio. The written text reveals the intention to recruit skilled electricians, mechanics, and telegraph operators, but promises willing viewers without expertise, “WE WILL TRAIN YOU.” At the bottom of the poster is a stamp of the address for the New York recruitment office.
