Title Wanted 25,000 Student Nurses
Creator Milton Herbert Bancroft
Date 1917
Format 28 x 41.5
Description With a hand on her heart, the young white woman in Milton Bancroft’s poster for the Women’s Committee of the Council of National Defense bravely serves her country as a nurse despite the foreboding shadow of soldiers, guns, and bayonets looming behind her. The recruitment poster clearly announces its objective at the top with the large text in black and red lettering, “WANTED 25000 STUDENT NURSES.” Bancroft’s technical use of penciling produces a melodramatic contrast between the light angelic nurse and the darkness of war. Unlike the numerous recruitment posters for the Red Cross, this image specifically calls for the enlistment of student nurses.
