Description Gerrit A. Beneker was a well-known American artist, and this poster advertising the sale of Victory Liberty Loans is perhaps his most famous work. Victory Liberty Loans were sold after the Armistice to pay off war debts and assist returning soldiers. In this poster, a working class man wearing a hat and overalls reaches into his pocket and exclaims, “SURE! We’ll Finish the Job.” His patriotic enthusiasm is communicated not only in his words and warm facial expression, but also in his collection of buttons, each representing a different bond campaign. Four Liberty Bonds were issued during the war, and citizens would receive commemorative buttons from the government as tokens of appreciation and as advertising to fellow citizens. The four buttons on the man’s overalls are visual evidence of his prolonged support for the war.
