Title Before Sunset
Creator Eugenie DeLand
Date 1917
Format 20 x 30 in
Description Eugenie DeLand was a high school art teacher, and one of the relatively few women artists to create propaganda posters during WWI. DeLand’s poster features a detailed illustration of the Statue of Liberty to encourage viewers to purchase Liberty bonds “BEFORE SUNSET.” The viewer is placed at a considerable distance from the statue in order to gain perspective of a picturesque sunset made to resemble the American flag. The red, white, and blue color scheme evokes patriotic sentiments; however, the darkness of the water significantly obscures the text, especially at a distance. DeLand produced several versions of this poster, and in other cases enlarged the text and faded the background resulting in a more easily read image.
