| Description | This recruitment poster for the U.S. Army depicts a bugler standing on a rock in front of a large, billowing American flag set against a golden backdrop. The bugler aims his sound high into the air, his body bending backward from the strain as he gently holds the flag’s edge with his left hand. At the top of the poster, lies the message in red lettering, “THE CALL OF DUTY,” a reference not only to the bugler, but also the poster imploring viewers to enlist in the Army “FOR HOME AND COUNTRY.” In small black font in the bottom right corner, the poster acknowledges that the image is adapted from a sculpture by Edoardo Cammilli. Little is known of the artist, or the original statue, although other posters featuring Cammilli’s sculpture were also created. |
