| Description | Of all the posters in the collection, perhaps none says more with less than this “V” created by the Strobridge Lithography Company, an image that was also printed in the form of stickers and decals to be placed on automobiles and storefront windows. The image is a clear example of an enthymeme, a persuasive message dependent on the audience supplying common knowledge for its completion. Indeed, without context, it is difficult to determine that in this case “V” for “victory” represents the purchasing Victory Liberty Loans, the fifth and final government backed bond for WWI. Set against a textured red backdrop, the large blue “V” beckons viewers across large distances. Although it is difficult to establish a direct connection to the impact of this particular campaign, Prime Minister Winston Churchill would later appropriate the “V” for “victory” symbol during WWII. |
