Description | Although technological advancements in printing contributed to numerous artistic innovations during WWI, not all posters were created equal, and this poster produced by the U.S. Food Administration violates a cardinal rule of war propaganda—simplicity first. To maximize their persuasive power, WWI posters needed to grab audience attention and efficiently communicate a message in support of the war. In comparison to other posters compelling citizens to eat fruits, vegetables, and fish, this poster is almost entirely verbal, providing an elaborate product-by-product justification for citizens to change their consumption habits. Although the poster is rich in detail, a poster is not the ideal medium to disseminate this quantity of verbal information. |
